How to convert 110v / 120v / 220v / 230 volts AC to 5 volt DC | 5v DC regulated power supply. This video shows construction of DIY 5vdc power supply using IC 7805.
Primary of transformer is connected to ac mains having around 110 volt ac / 120 volt ac / 230v ac. Step down transformer brings the voltage down to around 13 v AC at the output i.e. at the secondary. Transformer used is having central tap. Bridge consisting of 4 diodes is connected in the circuit. If output is taken across ground and positive node of bridge we get DC voltage which is not regulated i.e. due to fluctualtions in ac voltage at the input side of transformer there will be fluctuation in DC output across the bridge hence regulation of output voltage is needed as these fluctuations in voltage could be potentially harmful for the electronic equipments which may even burn the internal circuits.
Regulation of voltage is achieved by using a very famous voltage regulation 3 pin IC 7805. Pin no. 03 of 7805 IC will provide maximum voltage of 5 volts DC irrespective of input voltage at pin no. 01. Pin no. 02 is grounded with central tapping of transformer and ground of diode bridge. Output is taken across pin no. 02 as ground and pin no. 03 as supply of 7805 IC.
Readings are taken with digital multimeter.
This is how one can construct 5vdc regulated power supply from 110vac / 120vac / 220vac / 230vac etc.
By using transformer of sutaible step down ratio one can obtain 5v dc from 115v ac, 127v ac or 240v AC.
