Set up a Samba share on Ubuntu Server 14.04 + Auto show in finder. In this guide I will be showing you, via SSH, how to install and set up a samba share using Ubuntu Server 14.04. This guide will work with any computer capable of connecting via SSH to your Ubuntu server. This guide can also be used directly on the server, assuming you have a keyboard and monitor connected.
This guide also shows you how to make your SMB share show up in finder/nautilus/explorer without having to manually type in the local IP address via a tool called avahi.
The commands are as follows:
1) sudo apt-get install samba
2) sudo smbpasswd -a YourUsername
3) sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
4) Add this to the end of the file (spaces are important)
[name of share]
path = /path/to/share
available = yes
valid users = YourUsername
read only = no
browseable = yes
writable = yes
Press ctrl o to save and then ctrl x to exit nano
5) sudo restart smbd
6) sudo apt-get install avahi-daemon avahi-utils
7) sudo nano /etc/avahi/services/smb.service
8) COPY THIS
for some reason youtube doesn't allow brackets in its comments, the link below has the code. Follow the code for the SAMBA share part in 3.2.5
Again press ctrl o and ctrl x to save and exit. Then you will be finished!
