Ranger 2 9L V6 Ignition Switch - FrankenRanger lives again!!!. So I bought this truck - 1990 Ford Ranger 2.9L V6 5-speed - 18 months ago in rough shape barely running. It went to my (at the time) mechanic friend's shop (the same guy that this year charged me 7k for working on my '89 F150) and we found a whole host of issues - the timing was totally wrong, the cat was clogged, wrong fuel regulator, had an extra gallon of oil in it to compensate for a weak oil pump, etc. So I dropped about 2k into it and was told that it was unfixable - turned out to be a mis-wired solenoid (which the mechanic had done and insisted it was wired right so I took his word for it). So it got shelved and sat in his shop parking lot until a few months ago when the 7k$ truck bill happened and I pulled my business from him and had the Ranger - Frankenranger due to its chopped togetherness - towed home. My uncle Al helped me figure out the solenoid wiring issue but it still didn't run, so it stayed shelved at the bottom of my driveway. Well Al was able to come back and take another look at it, since he's the Ford-whisperer I wanted his diagnosis. I had discerned that it was getting spark but wasn't sure about fuel, so we got a fuel rail tester and discovered the fuel pump was fine (which the mechanic guy had said was also probably bad, wrong). But it still wouldn't start, so we checked spark again and no spark. So Al figured that it was the ignition switch going bad (which the mechanic guy should have known since he went through the trouble of bypassing the starter switch with a push button start, which it turned out it would have just been easier to replace the ignition switch itself).
So, the symptoms here were fail to start, or it would start and stall immediately. Sometimes it got spark, sometimes it didn't. The ignition switch was easy to replace, took about 30-40 minutes total, and cheap - I got the lifetime warranty one at O'Reilly for about 20 bucks. In the end a very easy fix.
