How to change the system theme in windows XP/Server 2003 (A). Difficulty level: advanced.
This video demonstrates how to enable the luna (i.e. 'XP Theme') on all editions of Windows Server 2003 or XP (except for XP starter edition).
The most common solution is to enter 'sc start themes' into a command shell, or run dialog. after this, the item 'Windows XP' should appear in the themes tab of Display Properties.
If not perhaps the Themes service is disabled as well as stopped. To enable it simply type 'sc enable themes' into a command shell or run dialog box.
If this still does not work it might be that the theme file is missing, or one of its .msstyle files (which is for the color of the theme).
To fix this please download the files from the following link:
Then, once downloaded, unzip and copy luna.theme to %SYSTEMDRIVE%\WINDOWS\Resources\
also copy the 'luna' folder to %SYSTEMDRIVE%\WINDOWS\Resources\ if it is missing.
Another reason this may fail, is because the service itself is missing, I demonstrate how to identify the service within the Serices Microsoft Managment Console Snap-in (services.msc) and then identify where the Themes service registry settings are located.
If the 'Themes' service is not present in the servics.mmc snap-in you will need to download a copy of the registry settings firstly.
You can get the reg file containing the settings at this link:
after this, simply double click the themes.reg file and it will create the nessecary registry hive and data sctructures in the Windows registry for the Themes service.
If none of the above helps or for other questions, post a comment.
This video demonstrates how to change the system theme on Windows XP/.2003 computers.
First you must login to the 'system' account. To do this open a command prompt.
Next check what the time is on the XP/2003 OS and then type the following but adding a minute to the time:
at *yourtimehere+1minute* /interactive cmd.exe
next close the old command prompt window and click the newly opned command prompt window.
Taskkill /f /im explorer.exe and hit enter
cd.. and hit enter
explorer.exe and hit enter.
now navigate to display properties and select the them that you want to use. click apply + ok
now simply logoff and the logon screen and other areas will now have the theme that you selected.
If this did not work or if you have any other questions please post a comment.
