Fix inactivity disconnects VMWare Workstation Ubuntu 12.04/14.04 LTS Bridged Network Connection. A detailed tutorial involving a few methods on How to fix inactivity and random disconnects in VMWare Workstation Ubuntu 12.04 14.04 LTS when using Bridged Network Connection.
This isn't solely a Ubuntu issue but rather than a networking issue that can affect all operating systems hosts such as Windows 7/8/Vista/Server and Mac OS, including virtual machines such as Ubuntu, Debian, Mint Linux and so on... I've personally seen this problem in both Ubuntu and Turnkey LAMP Appliance generally when using SSH via Putty.
After hours of attempting things I narrowed down the problem to a simple firewall issue but for other users I've decided to include 2 other methods that users have reported to work.
Method 1. Click edit networking network editor within VMWare Workstation and edit the bridge type connection, ensure that you select the network card that you want to connect as physical, should it be a wifi card or internal network. Many users reported this to work, generally reported by Mac OS operating system users. VPN TAP Drivers can also cause a lot of problems here so again, ensure automatic is not enabled.
Method 2. If changing the bridge connection mode from automatic to your network card then VMWare suggests that you update the firmware of your NIC, however most Workstation users I believe won't have such a network card that has firmware updates so if you have an on-board, or a cheap NIC like most of us then your only be able to update the drivers. Head over to your Motherboard manufacturer and find out what internal network card yours has.. then head over to Intel, Realtek, Marvel or another manufacturer and download the latest drivers (Windows generally doesn't find the latest driver even when trying a Windows Update.
Method 3. If all fails then it's likely that an outside force is having something to do with it, If you have any type of firewall software such as ESET NOD32, McAfee, Symantec Norton temporary disable it and see if the issue continues, please note that some firewalls can block networks and connections even when disabled, check blocked networks, connections and software. This simple process solved my issue.
If any of these methods help or don't have them please contribute and help others by leaving a few words via the comments.
